Sanjiang Ethnic Community View Photos

Dong woman in SanjiangSanjiang is known for its diverse minority culture. There are four ethnic groups in the region; Dong, Zhuang, Miao, Yao. They are famed for their carpentry skills and unique architecture. Many travelers escape into Sanjiang for the traditional, little affected Dong ways. The many highlights are well preserved Dong wooden structures-suspended houses, drum towers, magnificent wind-and-rain bridges and water wheels, Dong people's simple lifestyle, and their colorful local customs and conventions.

Weather & climate

Sanjiang is located at the base of rugged and rolling mountains and where the weather can be humid and changeable. Spring is accompanied almost by daily drizzle. Torrential rains occasionally strike the area in summer. As well as the general travel necessities, something to protect you from the rain is necessary when traveling to Sanjiang.

Attractions

Chengyang Wond-and-Rain BridgeWind-and-rain Bridge: The Wind-and-rain bridge is architecturally called tower bridge or flower bridge. Such bridges were built with purely wooden materials without nails. They highlight the skill and architectural brilliance of the Dong people. There are around 108 such bridges in Sanjiang County, among which the Chengyang Wind-and-Rain Bridge is the best. The bridge is 75 meters long and took the villagers 12 years to complete.

Dong Villages: Another highlight of Sanjiang is the numerous Dong villages. The Dongs live in villages of 20-30 households. Usually located facing near streams and rivers backed by mountains, it tends to provide a sense of relaxation and refreshment. There are also large villages of 600 households. Their houses, built of fir wood, are usually two or three stories high. People live on the upper floors, and the ground floor is reserved for domestic animals and firewood.

Diaojiaolou House(House sand on stilts) : this is a unique Dong wooden structure. Floors of such buildings range from 2 floors to 4 floors. The first floor is for storing farming utensils, raising poultry. The above floors are for the residents.

Hotels

Sanjiang HotelSanjiang hotel:At the commercial center of the town, this is one of the best hotels in the region.

Cheng Yang Drum-tower National Hotel: The hotel is close to the Chengyang Wind-and-Rain bridge in a Dong village. Facility may not rival that of the Sanjiang Hotel, but the surrounding scenery so beautiful it must be seen to be believed.

Transportation

Railway: The Sanjiang train station is quite distant outside the town and train travelers have to catch a bus into the town.

Highway: Sanjiang is located at the juncture of Hunan, Guangxi and Guizhou provinces. Departures from Guilin, Kaili are plentiful.

Guilin-Sanjiang: This 160 kilometers' journey passes through beautiful terraced rice fields, rolling mountains and ethnical villages.  

Note:

  1. The Chengyang Wind-and-Rain Bridge is quite a distance from downtown Sanjiang.
  2. Although it's possible to travel to the bridge on your own, it's much safer, more reliable, and hassle-free if arranged through a travel agency.
